01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Just across Hachijo-dori Street from the Kitadomon gate of To-ji Temple sits Hinode Shinise, an unassuming sweet shop marked by roadside banners and a compact glass display case. Visitors wandering the temple precinct or traveling to and from the monthly Kobo-ichi market often stop by, drawn by the rustic confections lined up within.

The natural place to begin is the shop's signature ohagi. Sized small and round, each portion pairs soft glutinous rice with an elegant, restrained sweetness. Beyond the traditional coarse bean paste, the Kobo-san Ohagi—coated in fragrant kinako toasted soybean flour—is light enough to tempt you into having more than one. Other everyday mochi snacks round out the counter, including smooth koshian-wrapped ankoromochi and tender mamemochi studded with red peas.

The seasonal offerings that shift through the calendar are equally worth attention. Early summer brings minazuki, featuring springy, chewy uiro steamed cake layered with plump adzuki beans, alongside a brown-sugar version topped with green uguisu beans. In early spring, large and juicy fresh strawberries are wrapped in white bean paste for ichigo daifuku, while autumn yields treats made with the season's chestnut crop, such as chestnut yokan and chestnut mochi pies.

On hotter days, picking up a frozen cup of hiyashiame is a refreshing option. As it gradually thaws into a slushy texture, the brisk aroma of ginger and the mellow sweetness of malt syrup soothe a parched throat after walking. Trays have been observed to run nearly bare toward the end of the day, making an earlier stop wise if you hope to pick up treats after touring the temple grounds.
